IS THIS FOR ME?
The classic Westfalia camper van is an easy to drive, compact machine, that is no bigger than your average mini-van. The cab forward, rear engine, rear wheel drive design creates a very unique, and comfortable driving experience. These are not rocket-ships (cruising at 65mph in the flats and 45mph over passes), but take this as an opportunity to embrace life at slower pace. We offer vans with automatic transmissions only.
WHERE CAN I GO?
The State of California is your playground but we do have few areas that are off limits. We do ask that you stick to the pavement. Washboard roads and rutted/rough roads are extremely hard on a vehicle. Burning man festival is off limits. We highly recommend not going to Burning Man with our vans as we will charge you $3,800 for cleaning / repairs. Vans are GPS tracked so please just don’t. Sorry but we must keep these vans nice for everyone. 100 miles are included with each day rented. Mileage is $0.75/ mile after that.
During the winter winter (10/15 to 5/15) vans are not allowed into the Sierra mountains due to snow and your safety (Tahoe, Yosemite, US 395 are all off limits during this time)
Death Valley is off limits due to extreme heat.

WHAT KIND OF CAMPING FEATURES DO THEY HAVE?
The Vanagon Westfalia is the one of the most utilitarian vehicles on the planet. The vehicle is capable of sleeping 4 people. Two on the lower bed, and two in the pop up bunk area. The pop top design allows for over 7 feet of standing room. Storage includes a closet and 8 additional compartments. The van holds up to 14 gallons of water for the sink and is easily filled with any garden hose. The stove top unit runs off of propane which is filled prior to each trip. You do not need to worry about refilling this tank when returning the van. We will go over how to use anything you are unsure of before leaving. You can also contact us at any time during your trip with questions. We can often respond with picture or video texts. For 2018, all vans now have their own refrigerators so you can leave the cooler behind.
WHY NOT RENT A REGULAR RV?
Your significant other isn't going to be impressed with a normal RV. If you found your way here you are probably intrigued by these unique campers. These vans are highly sought after, and for very good reason. They camp like nothing else, and still fit in a regular parking space. Sure, a large RV may have a toilet and a shower. but I can promise you'll have more fun driving, and camping in a VW.
CAN I BRING MY DOG?
Our vans are exceptionally clean and we only allow dogs in one of them. The van “Louise” can be rented if you have a dog. Please note that we will not allow dogs in any other vans under any circumstances.

Many rental companies charge extra for a lot of the things that we include. Chances are that our vans are in better shape, have more options (solar, modern refrigeration, etc) and have more camping essentials included. Be careful of this when shopping around.
HOW MANY PEOPLE FIT?
The Westfalia has 4 seat belts, and can sleep four (two on top bunk and two below) Most of our renters are couples, but two adults and two kids works great as well. We do not recommend four adults.
PICK UP / DROP OFF
Once your trip is booked you can email or call to figure out the pick up arrangements. San Jose is the closest airport, and generally less than a $50 Uber ride away from our shop. We can store one vehicle per rental at our facility at no charge. If you are coming from San Francisco you can arrange a shuttle with www.santacruzflyer.com
HOW DO I KEEP MY FOOD COLD?
Starting 2018 all of our vans have modern refrigerators that run off of the second battery bank. No more stopping for ice every few days !
DO THEY HAVE HEAT?
Westfalias do not come with auxiliary heaters, meaning that when they are not running, there is no heat. Most renters bring their own 20 degree sleeping bag and it is more than enough. Please do not idle these vans for heat. This can result in overheating.
DO THEY HAVE A/C?
No, A/C in these was never that great/reliable to begin with, and robs much needed horsepower. Roll down the window, crack the vent window and enjoy the open road. Sticking to the coast, or the mountains in June - Aug is a good idea, as the valleys can be extremely hot in the summer months.
DO YOU RENT IN THE WINTER?
Yes, The reason we moved our shop from Tahoe City to Santa Cruz is so we can operate all year long. However, we do not allow travel into snowy areas during the winter months. (Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, US 395, Sequoia, etc) This is for your own safety.
MINIMUM NUMBER OF NIGHTS
Because of the labor intensive process of cleaning and maintaining the vans between renters it does not make sense for us to do shorter term rentals. Destinations 150 miles or or more from our location have a 5 night minimum throughout the entire year.
ALL YEAR: $189 / nightly (3 Night minimum)
INSURANCE / ASSISTANCE
Insurance coverage for the duration of your trip is purchased through our partner Outdoorsy, and is mandatory. Drivers must be 25 years of age or older. Roadside assistance is available if you get a flat, run out of fuel, need a tow, etc. Only drivers listed on the rental agreement are allowed to drive. All drivers and their drivers’s licenses must be present at time of vehicle pick up. Insurance is provided by our booking partner Outdoorsy so don’t be surprised when you see an email from them after booking.
Reservation deposit (25% of full trip cost) is non-refundable
If the renter has paid in full and the booking is canceled more than seven days prior to booking start date, a partial refund of 75 percent of the full rental amount (minus fees) is issued
If canceled less than seven days prior to booking start date, a partial refund of 50% of the total rental amount (minus fees) is issued
